This sculpture from a fountain in Würzburg, Germa This sculpture from a fountain in Würzburg, Germany, reflects my position so far on 2021. I'm just kind of wondering. Actually, that's not true. I'm quite upbeat about the possibilities. But if 2021 isn't a vast improvement over 2020, then I think I'll react more like the little creatures on each side of the thinking man. ⁣

I can't remember where this was taken and given I' I can't remember where this was taken and given I'm still enjoying the halo effect of the holidays, I'm not terribly motivated to go through my files to look it up. Mostly, because the location doesn't really matter. That's an odd thing about travel: Some places matter a great deal in terms of where they are. But others are more about the mood or the memory rather than the geographic location. This train in the fog could be anywhere (or at least anywhere with rails and trees and fog). So to me, it is what the image evokes to each of us that matters more than where the photo was taken. Place matters but sometimes not as much as we think.⁣

For that, over the next three months, I'm sharing images that were chosen for the book. Some made it, others didn't since there was limited space. ⁣

This one comes from Nicaragua where we stopped at a little restaurant along the side of the road to Granada. The food was great, but the entertainment of this little girl and her dog made our day.⁣

Here's another view of the Lower Falls of the Lewi Here's another view of the Lower Falls of the Lewis River. I took it in the late evening and had to scramble down a⁣ wet hillside to get an unobstructed view of these falls. Before coming here, I never knew they existed. But that's one of the added benefits of discovery: Once you find one thing, you want to look for others. It just reminds me that there are SO many wonders within a few hours drive from my home. And yours. Time to start looking...⁣

You likely won't find this small waterfall on most You likely won't find this small waterfall on most maps. It's called McClellan Falls and you get to it from an unmarked forest service road off of Curly Creek road about ten miles west of the Lower Falls of the Lewis River in southern Washington. The falls are about a quarter mile from the end of the forest road, but the trail gives out after a few hundred feet and you have to bushwhack your way to get down to see the falls. But the wildest part about our time here was that there was a trailer parked at the end of the road. Minutes after we arrived, a pickup pulls up with a man and, we found out later, his nephew. They had planned on camping here but the trailer folks beat them to it. So rather than hunt down another spot, they built their camp right next to the trailer. I can only imagine how the people in the trailer felt when they got back there. And to complicate it further, the encroacher had five other friends who were on their way to join him and his nephew. So here's the question: If you were me, would you have said anything to the guy when you realized he was setting up a camp ten feet from the one existing campsite in this area? If so, what? #campingetiquette #notmyissue #encouragekindness ⁣ #washington #pnwcollective #bestofnorthwest #wanderwashington #seeing #localtravel #discoveryourworld #travel #traveling #instatrip #lewisriver #northwestnature #explorewashington #river #naturephotographer #naturephoto #instagood #travels #instago #localtravel #moss #mossytrees #travelwithimagination #hiddentravel #lowerfalls #camping #camplife
Stairs, doorways and paths that disappear around a Stairs, doorways and paths that disappear around a corner or into a forest have an inherent intrigue to me. I think they evoke both a sense of mystery, but also possibility. That, in many ways, summarizes travel for me. There's always something new to discover. And simple images like this one symbolize that allure of the unknown. It's funny to write such a phrase right now, during the pandemic, when the unknown is not seen as a welcoming concept, but almost a threatening one. And yet, I think that's all the more reason to look beyond what we know, what's familiar, and to explore. What you find could be worse, sure. Or it could be boring. But then again, it could also be so much better than anything you imagined. And you'll never know what is there until you walk up those stairs and look.⁣

Mossy trees aren't the only oversized things in th Mossy trees aren't the only oversized things in the forests of southern Washington. These ferns are huge and cover city block sized areas. You see one or two of these ferns and you barely notice if you're used to them (we have several in our own yard). But put this many of them together and suddenly, the scale alone makes you stop and notice what amazing plants these really are.⁣

Living the the Pacific Northwest, I'm used to moss Living the the Pacific Northwest, I'm used to moss. On trees, roofs, rocks, sidewalks, slow moving animals. You get the idea. But while camping at Lower Falls on the Lewis River, we came across a grove of trees that seemed out of a Tolkien book. It's a good reminder to always look up, down and all around you when you travel. The scene that is mildly interesting in front of you can be a whole different world above you. ⁣

A big part of local travel (local as in our state) A big part of local travel (local as in our state) for us this summer has been camping. Sound familiar? When you can't get out of the country, you can at least get out of the house. ⁣

Camping has made me appreciate several things: 1) The beauty of the state I live in (Washington), 2) the wonders that lie within a few hours drive from my home, 3) how everything tastes better eaten outdoors by a campfire, and 4) how soft and cushy my bed is at home. ⁣

This image is from the Lower Falls of the Lewis River in southern Washington. Our camp site was right by the river just a few hundred yards from this waterfall. Who says you have to travel around the world for wonderful trips?⁣

Here, the road and the railroad tracks are less th Here, the road and the railroad tracks are less the subject than the design they make. When you travel locally, it gives you the time and ability to focus and to see beauty in surprising places. Try this: Go for a walk with your entire goal being to spot some arrangement, of plants, trees, houses, telephone wires, roads, fences, cars or whatever, that delights you. You're not looking at them for what they are. You're looking at them as an artist might to see some simple arrangement that pleases you. You can use your phone not just to take a photo, but also as a viewfinder to create a frame around the scene. Your can make a rectangular frame with your fingers as well. Just that simple technique of framing something will aid in seeing something marvelous that otherwise would be an ordinary scene.⁣
