There's one thing I love about work trips (remembe There's one thing I love about work trips (remember those? You know, where companies actually paid you to fly to other cities to meet with people FACE TO FACE? Without a mask?). I love the non-work part of work trips. The moments before or after meetings when you can sneak away for an hour or two and play tourist in places and ways you probably wouldn't if you were in the same city on vacation. This shot was taken from the High Line in NYC on a morning before an 11 a.m. meeting. I loved the colors and shapes. But mostly, I loved being out on a work day in a cool place like Manhattan not working but instead, enjoying the weather and the sheer enjoyment of wandering someplace new. I do understand that work trips can be all work. But with a little effort, you can get out of your hotel and explore, especially in someplace like New York. I could have stayed all morning in my hotel room getting other work done. But I was much more productive in my meeting that day because of my little jaunt to a land of yellow tables and orange taxis. Make the time. Well, assuming you ever travel again for work. #travel #traveler #travelling #traveller #instatraveling #travels #travelblogger #instago #instatravelling #instatrip #instagood #hiddentravel #worldtraveler #businesstravel #worktrip #highline #yellowchair #yellowtable #newyorkcity #maketheeffort
Guess where this is? I've intentionally left off t Guess where this is? I've intentionally left off the location tagging just so you can try to figure it out. It's a place famous for its architecture, but usually that architecture is offset by a great deal of water. Got it? ⁣
⁣
Well, my point here is that we get so used to iconic images of a place that contain obvious clues and if you take those clues away, in this case, the water, it makes it much harder to figure out. But note the style of the architecture. It could come from several places in Europe, but one place in particular: Venice, Italy.⁣
⁣
No bridges. No gondolas, No crowded squares. And most of all, no canals. But once you know it is Venice, you cannot NOT see it as being from there. Odd how context changes everything.⁣

I once got a ticket for a perfectly legal three-po I once got a ticket for a perfectly legal three-point turn that the cop thought I made in the wrong location (he saw me from many blocks away). I objected, but was too lazy to go fight it in court. At the traffic class I took to get the ticket off my record, the teacher asked, "How many of you feel you're here unjustly?" About half of us raised our hands. He then asked this: "How many of you have ever sped and not got a ticket?" We all raised our hands. "Stop complaining," he said.⁣
⁣
Why tell you this? Because I try to be really sensitive about not taking photos of people without their permission. And yet, here I am in Barcelona, Spain (in a pre-COVID moment) taking a photo of this interesting sculpture, and the guy in blue (which may be hard to see if you're looking at this on your phone), is giving me the evil eye, as if I'd stalked him and taken a picture of him changing clothes. I actually didn't even notice is upset expression at the time. And so it goes: We get busted for things we didn't even know we did wrong which only compensates for all those photos I HAVE taken of people knowingly sneaking a shot of them in the past. There's a principle buried in here somewhere. I think.⁣

This juggler in Quebec City reminds me of how much This juggler in Quebec City reminds me of how much the human element stands out on a trip. I do remember many of the architectural features of the city ( a beautiful one at that). But the people - even ones you only observe - stick with me the most. Especially this guy. My only disappointment was that I was waiting for him to light the rubber chicken on fire for even more drama. Oh well. ⁣

I remember visiting the Upper Falls of the Yellow I remember visiting the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River several years ago and thinking, "Those are beautiful." But then, as we spent more time in the park (a VERY popular activity last year and, I'd guess, this year as we eek our way out of COVID), I realized that Yellowstone is one of those National Parks that has both the grandeur and also so many smaller sights that are, at least to me, as meaningful and memorable. I remember fishing with my dad and sons on the Firehole River at sunset and hearing two osprey calling out to each other. If you've never seen an osprey, they are a fierce raptor bird, like a hawk or eagle. But these two birds had voices that were, I don't know now to describe it, well, wimpy. A very high pitched sound more like a small songbird than a large raptor. So while I love the big sights in Yellowstone, it's the sound of ospreys over the river that I recall the most. But I have no photo of them. So you'll have to settle for the falls.⁣

Have you ever had a small moment on a trip that turned out to be one of the biggest ones?⁣

The streets of Kusadasi, Turkey. When I was a kid, The streets of Kusadasi, Turkey. When I was a kid, riding a bike, once I got the hang of it, was more a means of getting somewhere than anything else. But when I returned to bike riding several years ago as an adult, I noticed something I hadn't since that first day when I could ride on my own without training wheels as a kid: the sheer joy and wonder of non-motorized movement in speeds faster than I can run. Next time you're able to ride a bike, be aware - really think about - the experience, the flow, the movement, the perfect cadence of one leg pushing down while the other has a micro rest. It's an amazing experience when you think about it. We just tend not to. #travel #traveler #travelling #traveller #instatraveling #travels #travelblogger #instago #instatravelling #instatrip #instagood #hiddentravel #worldtraveler #travelphotography #travelphoto #traveling #bikestagram #biking #bike #streetbike #kusadasi #turkey #wonder #instabike #awareness #beaware
Do you ever remember a place based primarily on th Do you ever remember a place based primarily on the weather? Here's an example of where the clouds that you do see matter a great deal. In Peru's Sacred Valley, the clouds seem to be ever shifting and can dramatically change the feel of the place in minutes. And while we may not consciously note it, such changes in the angle, quantity and quality of the light can affect us greatly. I can think of several places I've visited on trips where I don't remember too much of what happened there, but I remember how I felt there almost entirely because of the weather or the light.⁣

I often think of the line famed landscape photogra I often think of the line famed landscape photographer Charlie Waite told me when I did one of his photo tours: "The clouds you don't see are more important than the ones you do." His meaning is that the ones behind you that may block the sun will affect your photo more than those in the photo. ⁣
⁣
Same with this shot in in the Sahara: Sometimes what you don't see is much more interesting than what you do. The shadows make for a much more interesting photo than one of me and my two sons after only three hours of sleep heading back through the desert on our camels. Sometimes the richest details show up in the negative spaces or, as in this image, the shadows.⁣

Piers are highly functional structures. If you loo Piers are highly functional structures. If you look at the materials, there's nothing glamorous there. But because of their locations, piers take on far greater weight or meaning than their humble purposes would imply. This one, in San Simeon, CA, just down the hill from Hearst Castle, can be downright magical in the twilight hours of early morning or evening. You can stroll out to the end of the pier to fish or merely to take in the scenery. Or you can stand where I did on the beach when I made this shot, and appreciate the rugged beauty of this pile of wood. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Or much longer.⁣

In college in Southern California where I was born, my roommate was from Arkansas and thought that seagulls were the most magnificent birds he'd ever seen. We all considered them flying rats since they were a daily occurrence (and frequent nuisance) there.⁣
⁣
So I'm sure someone who lives on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica where this fellow hangs out (literally) would probably wonder why I bothered taking a photo. But to me, he was super interesting, especially when he and his buds started in on their howling. But I suspect that had we stayed there another few weeks, they would have slipped into the seagull category. It's a wonder that wonder can fade so quickly.⁣

If you're reading this, you probably stick around and read through the end credits in movies. Nice. You never know what surprises you'll find. Keep it up.
